A Few Things About Us
Cumberland Lions is a non-sectarian, non political service organization directly connected to the wider world of Lions Clubs through Lions Clubs International. Our motto is ''We Serve'' and this is the underlying principle of our association.
Lions are made up of dedicated volunteers who serve their communities wherever the need is the greatest. To this end, Lions Clubs engage in projects that range from global, national, provincial, district, city to community purposes. In addition to humanitarian service, Lions enjoy great fellowship and create opportunities for the development of leadership skills always striving toward the common goal of helping those in need.
Cumberland Lions have many signature projects in which they participate every year to meet this goal in support of non-profit organizations and charities. These generally fall into the following categories: Community Services, Disaster Preparedness and Relief, Environmental Services, Health and Wellness, International Relations and Lions Opportunities for Youth.
Although the Club seeks to serve where the need is the greatest, specific fund raising events are held throughout the year in support of these projects. To mention a few, these include Oktoberfest, Rock & Roll Night, Purina Dog Walk, Farmer's Market, Breakfasts (including a Breakfast with Santa), Suppers, Maplefest and an annual Garage Sale & Silent Auction. There are also many events which are not of a fund raising nature such as Remembrance Day, Christmas Party and Charter Night. Periodically, the Club is called upon to assist with community events e.g. Winterfest. The Club also owns a Hall which is used by non-profit organizations for their activities at a reduced rent. Regular rentals are also made available to the public for various functions.
How to Become a Lion
Cumberland Lions always seek new and enthusiastic quality members who are ready and willing to serve those in need in the community and to help create a better community and world for all. The membership is open to any person of legal majority and good moral character and reputation, regardless of their color, age, religion, language or political beliefs, who is ready and interested in helping others. The Club meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month. There are several categories of membership. These are Active/Regular, Member-at-Large, Honorary, Privileged, Life Member, Associate and Affiliate.
New members are expected to give freely of their time and energy; to attend regular club meetings (if an Active member); to be available for committee assignments; and to support club officers and fund raising projects. As stated above, the benefits include, among other things, helping those in need, making a difference in the member's community, developing leadership and communication skills, working hands-on to meet community needs and meeting new people.
In addition to the more commonly known membership programs, Cumberland Lions are in the process of trying to organize a community based Alpha Leo Club designed for young people between 12 and 18 years of age. The Alpha Leo Club motto is Leadership, Experience and Opportunity and the Cumberland Lions would be the sponsor of the Leo Club. Youth who join Leo Alpha Clubs have fun.
